Helpful hints and tips for UFC undisputed 3

A gentleman over at Gamefaqs had some nice tips, I thought this community could use them too.

S2S | Posted 3/1/2012 5:04:05 PM | message detail | quote This has been mentioned before in a few other threads but I feel like it deserves it's own topic. Total n00bs and UFC veterans can both learn a thing or two from this, plus I think it will stop a lot of the useless threads about how hard the ground game is online.

- When you boot up this game, if you have any intention of playing online, the VERY FIRST thing that you should do is go straight to Tutorial/Practice Mode!

- Choose the weight class and specifically the fighter that you use most often when playing online. Set your opponent as whoever is highest overall or even whoever has the best ground game in your division. Use Default for the energy settings if you plan on playing Ranked. If you're doing Player Matches, choose whatever settings you like.

- Pause and go to Practice Settings/Partner Options. Choose COM for your partner control, set his difficulty to AT LEAST Experienced if not Advanced, and then change his category to Grapple.

- Your partner will only attempt to take you down or clinch you. Once he gets you into a clinch, he will only try to slam or trip you. Once he gets you to the ground, he will only try to transition to a more dominant position or submit you. This is INCREDIBLY useful for learning how to time transition reversals and takedown stopping knees, as well as to get a feel for the timing on your transitions. Remember though, once you jump online, the servers in this game are a bit laggy so you're really going to want to be on your A-game when it comes to timing reversals, transitions, and knees.

- Eventually you can set your partner's category to Fighter Original so that he won't be limited to just grappling. Try working some stand-up with him just as a quick warm up to brush up on your timing.

- When standing, work knees into your combos!!! You never know when an online opponent might try to shoot in on you, so if you're used to painting together combos that end with a knee, you might just catch him at the perfect time. I'm pretty sure that all fighters throw a knee by holding away from your opponent on the left stick and then tapping B. It may be different for fighters who fight southpaw or in a different stance.

- One last tip that I'd like to throw in is to practice feinting your strikes when you're standing as well as stalling your transitions when you're on the ground. You can feint or "fake" a strike by holding RT+RB and clicking any strike button. This usually tricks your opponent into swaying or throwing a counter and it should automatically create an opening for either a takedown or a technique strike. Test it out in Practice mode! Stalling a transition is only useful against human opponents but it is so incredibly important online. Basically all you have to do is hold the right stick up or down for a couple of seconds. This will cause your fighter to look as though he's about to transition, so your opponent will likely attempt a reversal out of instinct. When he misses his reversal, quickly do a real transition and you should get it almost every time. Be careful with this though since stalling is not the same as blocking and your opponent can still transition or sweep you while you're stalling.

- After a while of working on those different techniques, go ahead and start a Ranked Match and see how much better you do!

tl;dr: Go to practice mode in the tutorial menu when you first boot up the game! Roll with the computer and practice reversals, transitions, and knees to stop takedowns. Work some stand up too! Your online record will improve or your money back.

Now his line about stalling transitions is only true for advanced and below, expert and ultimate, you need to know that, and everyone online should know it.

Something he didn't mention about feinting, it works for takedowns too.

Re: Helpful hints and tips for UFC undisputed 3

This sounds like it would be a very good idea for practicing transition reversals so i tried to do it, but when i entered practice and set com to grapple on advanced difficulty he won't engage me at all. He just walks around and will poorly attempt to defend strikes. I've tried it several different time in different weight classes with different fighter and it still will not perform properly. Anyone else have anything similar?

I'm positive I have it on the correct settings.
